Think of Cranbourne as a place where town and country meet. It is a suburb in Melbourne. Cranbourne lies 43 km south-east of Melbourne’s Central Business District.

Cranbourne’s story starts long before Melbourne even existed. Before Europeans arrived, the Boonwurrung Aboriginal people lived here. Then came the Ruffy brothers in 1836. They built the Cranbourne Inn.

Progress was slow due to the Koo Wee Rup swampland. William Lyall helped drain the swamp. This made the land good for farming.

From 1860 to 1994, Cranbourne was the Shire of Cranbourne’s administrative centre. The old council building is now a health care centre. It’s called The Cranbourne Integrated Care Centre.

Cranbourne experienced brief fame in 1860. Several meteorites were found. The biggest one is in the British Museum. You can see models of these meteorites here in Cranbourne.

The railway arrived in Cranbourne in 1887. This boosted the town. It helped dairy farms and orchards send produce to market. Cranbourne grew as a market town. But nearby Dandenong became more important.

Today, Cranbourne is a growing residential area. The population was over 21,000 in 2021.

In the south, you will find the Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne. There is also the Cranbourne Racecourse.

The Casey Complex has many community facilities. These include an indoor skating facility. It has the Cranbourne Indoor Sports Centre and a library. YMCA Casey Race is here too. It is the local swimming pool.

Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre is in the town centre. Thompson Parkway Shopping Centre is in the north.
