Why did they move a perfectly good house? We’re standing in front of the Aynesworth-Wright House, a charming piece of old Austin that holds a few surprises. This house wasn’t always here at Pioneer Farms. It was originally built in 1852 on East Avenue by Isaiah Hezekiah Aynesworth. He was a man of many talents: a Baptist preacher, a cabinet maker, and apparently, a pretty good home builder. He designed this home in the popular Greek Revival style of the time, a simple yet elegant design that speaks to the early days of Austin. But here’s where it gets interesting: its second owner, Dr. Joseph Wright, was more than just a homeowner. He was a physician and a surveyor, and rumour has it he even practiced medicine in a log cabin right near his home. You can almost imagine the hustle and bustle of those days, with folks traveling from all over for Dr. Wright’s care. Years later, the Aynesworth-Wright House found itself facing demolition. Thankfully, it was saved and relocated here to Pioneer Farms in 1980. Today, lovingly restored by the Franklin Savings Association, it stands as a testament to those early Austin days, a whisper of a time when life was a little slower, a little closer to the land.
