Mobil’s ghost still lingers over Pulau Pesek. Or so it seems, when you stand here, contemplating this once-separate island, now absorbed into the industrial giant of Jurong Island. Pulau Pesek, a name whispered among the old fishing communities who once called this area home, holds a secret to Singapore’s transformation. Before the towering refineries and the maze of pipelines, before the island was even fully joined to its neighbors, Pulau Pesek housed a Mobil Oil facility. This was in the late 1960s and early 1970s, a time when Singapore was rapidly industrializing. Land on the mainland was becoming scarce. The government, with remarkable foresight, saw the potential of these small islands, particularly for petrochemicals. Pulau Pesek, with its Mobil Oil presence, became a pioneer, a testing ground for what would become a national enterprise. Esso on Pulau Ayer Chawan and Singapore Refinery Company on Pulau Merlimau joined Mobil in this early venture, laying the groundwork for the petrochemical boom. This initial success solidified the government’s vision. The idea of a consolidated chemical hub, a place where companies could benefit from interconnected infrastructure and shared resources, began to take shape. JTC Corporation took the reins in 1991, orchestrating the massive land reclamation project that birthed Jurong Island. By 1995, the physical merging of the islands, including Pulau Pesek, had begun. The fishing villages, the wooden stilt houses, the palm-fringed shores, all faded into memory, replaced by the steel and concrete of a new era. Pulau Pesek, though no longer a distinct entity, remains a significant piece of the Jurong Island story. It represents the initial spark, the first step in Singapore’s ambitious journey to become a global petrochemical powerhouse.
