Ever wonder how a place gets its name? Haggerston, nestled in Hackney, London, might just have an answer rooted in Saxon history. Haggerston likely owes its name to a Saxon farmer named Hærgod. Picture him, standing on this very land centuries ago, surveying his “ton,” or farmstead. Perhaps there was even a boundary stone here bearing his mark, forever etching his name into the landscape. Haggerston, first recorded as Hergotestane in the Domesday Book of 1086, whispers tales of rural tranquility. Imagine farmers supplying milk, dairy products, and horse feed to nearby London. The Cat & Mutton Bridge, spanning the Regents Canal, carries the legacy of a former alehouse. Sadly, the original pub closed in 1919. But its spirit lives on in a new establishment, built in 1909. It was originally named the Sir Walter Scott but now goes by La Vie en Rose. Haggerston holds both the echoes of the past and the pulse of the present. The notorious Kray twins were born here on Stean Street in 1933. Years later, in 1990, tragedy struck when PC Laurence Brown was murdered on Pownall Road. He was responding to a 999 call, a stark reminder of the shadows that can linger even in the most ordinary of places. Haggerston has also seen its share of history’s larger events. In 2005, a number 26 bus on Hackney Road was targeted in the London bombings. Thankfully, the device only partially detonated, averting a major disaster. From gas works to gated communities, Haggerston bears the marks of change. The northern section of Haggerston Park, once an industrial site, transformed into a green oasis in the late 1950s. The southern part followed suit in the 1980s. Haggerston’s proximity to the trendy Shoreditch has fueled its resurgence. Students and creatives flock here, drawn by the area’s unique blend of history and hip. Haggerston has even earned the nickname “Hackerston,” a nod to the tech start-ups that have sprung up around Old Street. As you stand here, in the heart of Haggerston, feel the layers of history beneath your feet, from Saxon farmers to modern innovators, a testament to the enduring spirit of this vibrant corner of London.
