Nestled in the heart of Southall, St Anselm’s Church stands as a testament to faith and community. St Anselm’s has witnessed remarkable transformations since its humble beginnings in 1906. The original church, housed in a simple tithe barn of Southall Manor House, served the burgeoning Catholic community. As the congregation grew, so did the need for a larger space. In 1919, Father William M. Buckle launched a passionate appeal for funds, famously advertising in The Tablet with the plea, “Save us at Southall or we Perish”. His efforts bore fruit, and a new church and school were erected in 1920. This dual-purpose building cleverly housed the church in one half and a small junior school in the other. St Anselm’s continued to evolve with the community’s needs. By 1930, further expansion was necessary, leading to a new, larger church built alongside the school. This brick structure served its purpose for several decades until the present St Anselm’s Church was constructed in 1967-68. The current St Anselm’s, designed by John Newton of Burles, Newton & Partners, is a striking example of modern church architecture. Its stained-glass windows, designed by Patrick Reyntiens, add a vibrant touch of artistry to the sacred space. St Anselm’s connection to the past is preserved through its dedication to St. Anselm of Canterbury. St. Anselm held a manor in nearby Hayes and is believed to have passed through Southall on his journeys. Today, St Anselm’s serves a diverse congregation representing over fifty nationalities, a testament to its inclusive and welcoming spirit. Beyond its religious services, St Anselm’s acts as a vital hub for the Southall community. It houses the De Nobili Dialogue Centre, a place for interfaith dialogue and prayer. It also plays a crucial role in supporting those in need through its food collection point, which assists over 200 families. The church’s close ties with St Anselm’s Catholic Primary School further strengthen its connection to the community. From its humble beginnings in a tithe barn to its modern-day presence, St Anselm’s has been a constant presence in Southall. It continues to be a beacon of hope and community, a place where faith, culture, and service intersect.
