Hidden within the vibrant tapestry of Buenos Aires, the Santa Rita Church whispers tales of faith, resilience, and community. The Santa Rita Church stands as a beacon of hope. It embodies the unwavering spirit of its namesake, Saint Rita of Cascia. The story of Santa Rita Church begins not with bricks and mortar, but with a dream. A group of women, known as the Alma Mater Institution, envisioned a school. It would be dedicated to Santo Tomás de Aquino in the Villa de Santa Rita. The cornerstone was blessed in November 1928 on the very ground where the church stands today. But fate had other plans. The school never materialized, and the devotion to Santo Tomás de Aquino waned. The burgeoning devotion to Saint Rita, already present in the area, led to a change of plans. On October 7, 1930, the Santa Rita Parish was born. It was entrusted to the Oblates of the Virgin Mary. Father Amílcar Merlo, the first parish priest, faced a unique challenge. His first task was to transform the single existing classroom into a chapel. With a table as an altar, a large crucifix, a simple paper image of Saint Rita, and colorful fabrics draped over rustic boards, the first Santa Rita Church came to life. The current Santa Rita Church building, designed by architect Juan B. Negri, wasn’t inaugurated until October 23, 1943. It is said the sanctuary predates the parish. A statue of Santo Tomás de Aquino was commissioned from Barcelona. It arrived in the port of Buenos Aires, but due to inclement weather, never reached its intended destination. It remained in storage, a poignant reminder of the original plan. In the late 1960s, a special space began to take shape behind the altar: the “Camarín de Santa Rita.” Its walls are adorned with works by artist Elio Vitali. A large wooden cross and a unique wooden carving of Saint Rita draw pilgrims from across Argentina, Latin America, and even Europe. The Camarín’s walls are covered with plaques of gratitude, testaments to the countless answered prayers and miracles attributed to Saint Rita’s intercession. The Santa Rita Church continues to evolve. In 2016, during the Year of Mercy, the church was designated a Holy Door. It was a moment of great pride and significance for the community. Between 2016 and 2017, with the support of the National Directorate of Architecture, the church’s facade, sidewalks, and interior walls were restored to their original beauty. While the 90th anniversary of the Santa Rita Church in 2020 was a muted affair due to the pandemic restrictions, it marked another milestone in its rich history. Under the leadership of the current parish priest, Marcelo Turletti, the Santa Rita Church remains a vital part of the community, continuing to inspire faith and hope in the heart of Buenos Aires.
