Contemplate the twisted stone ring before you. This is the Islington War Memorial. It stands as a poignant reminder of sacrifice.

The Islington War Memorial wasn’t always here. A “temporary” memorial was erected in 1918 by Charles Higham. It honored those who fell in World War I. That original memorial was a painted concrete obelisk. It had bronze plaques, a wreath, and concrete flower boxes.

By 2004, the council planned landscaping work. It became clear the old memorial needed replacing. It was demolished in 2006.

The new Islington War Memorial was completed in 2007. Artist John Maine designed it. His twisted stone ring design was chosen by a memorial commission. The commission included representatives from the Royal British Legion and the Canonbury Society. Council representatives were also involved.

The stone came from Fujian province in eastern China. The eight-tonne ring was carved there. Then it was shipped to England. An inscription echoes the original memorial. It reads “In Memory of the Fallen.” Separate slabs bear the words “Land,” “Sea,” “Air,” and “Home”.

The entire project cost £490,000. The stone, apron, and walls cost about £100,000.

Unfortunately, the Islington War Memorial started to sink in 2013. This was because of inadequate foundations. Remedial work was required.

In July 2018, five VC plaques were added. They honor Parslow, Booth, Train, Sayer, and Roberts. These are laid in a row with blank stones.

Behind the Islington War Memorial, there is a wildlife garden. In front, an esplanade leads to a flagpole.

The Islington War Memorial also features in a children’s book. It’s called “Gaspard’s Foxtrot” by Zeb Soanes. James Mayhew illustrated it. The composer Jonathan Dove referenced it, too. He did so in his orchestral adaptation of the story.

The Islington War Memorial stands as a symbol of remembrance. It is a tribute to those who served. It is a place for reflection and gratitude. Remember their sacrifice as you reflect.
