Can you smell the salty tang of the sea? It blends with the scent of fresh pastries from a nearby café here on Sluseholmen. Sluseholmen isn’t just a neighborhood. It’s a carefully crafted experience, a testament to Copenhagen’s innovative spirit. Sluseholmen, meaning “The Sluice Isle,” takes its name from the Slusen lock just south of the peninsula. This lock plays a vital role, diligently regulating the harbor’s water levels. Sluseholmen’s story is one of transformation. Once a hub of heavy industry, including a Ford car factory, it underwent a dramatic makeover at the turn of the millennium. The visionaries behind this change, Dutch architect Sjoerd Soeters and the Danish firm Arkitema, partnered with the Port and City of Copenhagen. They dreamed of a vibrant canal district, inspired by similar developments in Amsterdam. Their dream materialized in 2004 when construction began. By 2008, the first residents began to move in. Today, Sluseholmen boasts a charming canal district with 1,150 apartments spread across artificial islands. Twenty different Danish architecture firms designed the facades of the townhouses. This approach created a diverse and visually captivating cityscape that echoes Copenhagen’s vernacular architecture from the early 1900s. At the tip of Sluseholmen, the Metropolis high-rise stands tall. Designed by Future Systems, its futuristic design takes cues from the Langebro bridge’s control tower. Along the eastern waterfront, the brightly colored wooden sheds of Valby Boat Club add a touch of nostalgia. Originally slated for demolition, these sheds were preserved to maintain the area’s maritime heritage. Today, they provide a striking contrast to the modern architecture. The club also has a restaurant open to the public. In 2011, Sluseholmen welcomed the third Copenhagen Harbour Bath, designed by Kasper Danielsen Arkitekter. For a taste of local life, visit Ricco’s coffee shop, a beloved spot among residents. And, if you’re a fan of the Olsen-banden films, you might recognize Sluseholmen’s North Quay from a dramatic explosion scene in “The Olsen Gang Outta Sight.” Sluseholmen truly embodies Copenhagen’s blend of old and new, industry and leisure. It is a vibrant community built on a foundation of innovation and a deep respect for its maritime past.
