Listen closely. The Memorial Community Church stands before you a testament to faith resilience and remembrance. Its Neo-Byzantine style is breathtaking. The imposing structure with its two towers speaks volumes. It whispers stories of a community’s devotion and sacrifice.

This wasn’t always the Memorial Community Church. It began in 1871 as the Barking Road Tabernacle a simpler building burdened by debt. Robert Rowntree Clifford arrived in 1897. He revitalized the congregation erased the debts and fostered remarkable growth. This led to the formation of the West Ham Central Mission in 1904.

The present building however a marvel of architecture designed by William Hayne was completed in 1922. This wasn’t just any construction project. It was a tribute. The church was dedicated to the local men who lost their lives in World War I. This dedication runs deep. The bells in the east tower bear the names of 169 of these fallen heroes. One bell even honors Prince Maurice of Battenberg the only member of the British Royal Family killed in action. Another commemorates the Unknown Warrior a poignant symbol of sacrifice.

The cost of building the Memorial Community Church was substantial around £60000. The construction took fifteen months. In 1924 a magnificent organ built by R Spurden-Rutt arrived a gift from Dame Clara Butt. This organ was innovative using electric action. The bells themselves were dedicated in 1926 with a performance by the baritone Kennerley Rumford adding to the solemnity of the occasion.

The Memorial Community Church isn’t just bricks and mortar. It’s a living tapestry woven from the threads of history faith and community. In 1938 Hettie Clifford Robert’s wife received an OBE for her tireless work as superintendent of the women’s work at the Mission. The church evolved. In 1978 it became the Memorial Baptist Church Plaistow. Then in 2006 the congregation of St Andrew’s Church merged forming the Memorial Community Church as we know it today. This is more than a place of worship. It’s a place of memory a place of community a place where faith continues to thrive. A fitting tribute to those it remembers and a beacon for those it serves today.
