Hidden amongst the bustling cityscape of Auckland lies Glenfield, a suburb brimming with untold stories. Glenfield often gets overlooked in favor of its flashier North Shore neighbors. But beneath its unassuming exterior lies a rich tapestry of history. Before the iconic Harbour Bridge connected the North Shore to Auckland, Glenfield was a tranquil farming community. It was a world of strawberry patches and dairy farms. It served as Auckland’s market garden, providing fresh produce to the burgeoning city. Imagine horse-drawn carts laden with strawberries and milk, making their way along dusty tracks towards the ferry. These ferries then carried their precious cargo across the water to Auckland’s hungry markets. Glenfield wasn’t always known by this name. Originally, it was called Mayfield. This name, inspired by the blossoming white manuka bushes, evoked the image of an English springtime. However, in 1912, to avoid confusion with a town in Canterbury, the name was officially changed to Glenfield. One particularly charming tale revolves around the Mission Hall on Bentley Avenue. In 1915, the community rallied together to build this hall. It became a shared space for the Anglican, Methodist, and Presbyterian congregations. Astonishingly, the entire structure, complete with ornate double gates and gateposts, was erected in a single day. The community commenced work at the crack of dawn, 5:30 am on September 4th, and by 6 pm, the Mission Hall stood complete. The development of Glenfield took a dramatic turn in 1959 with the opening of the Auckland Harbour Bridge. This monumental event transformed Glenfield from a sleepy rural outpost into a rapidly expanding suburb. The once quiet fields gave way to houses. The dusty tracks were replaced by paved roads. Glenfield even boasts the distinction of having the North Shore’s first shopping mall. Glenfield Mall, opened in 1971, became a hub of activity. It stands as a testament to the suburb’s transformation. Glenfield’s story is also interwoven with literary figures. The renowned New Zealand author, James K. Baxter, passed away in Glenfield in 1972. Fellow author, Janet Frame, also called Glenfield home during the 1970s. Glenfield may not be as famous as some of Auckland’s other suburbs. But its unique history and hidden gems make it a captivating destination. So, next time you find yourself in Auckland, venture off the beaten path and discover the quiet charm and rich heritage of Glenfield. It’s a journey through time, revealing a fascinating narrative of rural life, community spirit, and suburban transformation.
