Established in 1962, Hales Franciscan High School holds a unique place in Chicago’s history. It stands as a testament to a community’s commitment to education and cultural pride. Hales Franciscan was Chicago’s only historically African-American, all-male Catholic college preparatory high school. It was one of only three such institutions in the entire nation. The school, nestled in the Bronzeville neighborhood on Chicago’s south side, was more than just bricks and mortar. It was a beacon of hope, a place where young men were nurtured and empowered to strive for “perfect manhood,” the school’s motto. Originally part of the Archdiocese of Chicago, Hales Franciscan was deeply rooted in its Catholic faith while celebrating its distinct African-American heritage.

Hales Franciscan High School was founded by the Franciscans of the Sacred Heart Province with support from the Archdiocese and then-Mayor Richard J. Daley. The school sought to provide a quality Catholic education to African-American males, merging students from Corpus Christi High School and St. Elizabeth High School. This initiative was a continuation of a legacy that began with Father Augustus Tolton, America’s first Black Catholic priest. Father Tolton and the Franciscans had previously collaborated on St. Joseph School in Quincy, Illinois, the state’s first Catholic school for African Americans. The Franciscans’ experience with St. Joseph’s and other similar schools informed the model used at Hales Franciscan, a model that would later influence urban schools nationwide.

For 57 years, Hales Franciscan High School served as a cornerstone of the Bronzeville community. The Spartans, as the school’s athletic teams were known, competed in the Chicago Catholic League. They brought home numerous titles, showcasing the students’ talent and dedication. Beyond the court, Hales Franciscan boasted a 100% college acceptance rate since 1996. Graduates went on to prestigious institutions like Yale, Stanford, and the University of Chicago. Among its notable alumni are NBA player JaVale McGee and professional basketball player Jerome Randle. Even its staff included remarkable figures, such as former politician Jack Ryan, who taught at the school before his Senate run in 2004.

Sadly, declining enrollment and financial difficulties led to the school’s suspension in 2016. Despite efforts to revive it, Hales Franciscan High School permanently closed its doors in 2019. Though the school is no longer active, its legacy lives on. It serves as a reminder of the power of education and the importance of community, a place where countless young men were shaped into “perfect manhood” and prepared for a bright future.
