“Did you know that the roots of La Iglesia de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Últimos Días in Uruguay stretch back to the 1940s?” It all began with Frederick S. Williams. He was the president of the Argentine Mission. He visited Montevideo to talk about La Iglesia de Jesucristo.

In 1944, the Montevideo Branch was created. It reported to the Argentine Mission. As more people joined, the Uruguayan Mission was formed. Frederick S. Williams became its president.

They needed a place to meet. In 1954, they started building a small chapel. The first stone was placed on March 30. It was on Bulevard Artigas and Avenida Suárez. The chapel was opened on December 12.

For a while, the Paraguay Mission was under the Uruguayan Mission until 1978. In 1998, they began building the Montevideo Temple in Carrasco. Gordon B. Hinckley opened it on March 18, 2001. La Iglesia de Jesucristo now has 109 chapels in Uruguay. The main temple is in Montevideo.

Let me share a story about the early days. Elder Richard G. Scott was one of the first missionaries in Uruguay. At the temple groundbreaking, he said he first arrived in Montevideo 48 years earlier. He saw the church grow. He saw families and missionaries. He was thankful for the blessings of the temple.

In 2001, Uruguay had 73000 members of La Iglesia de Jesucristo. By 2024, there were over 108000. Nearly 25000 people visited the Montevideo Temple during its open house. Many said they felt at peace inside. They felt like they had left their worries behind. Some called it the most beautiful building in the country.

President Batlle of Uruguay toured the temple. He said it was a place of moral values. President Hinckley dedicated the Montevideo Uruguay Temple in 2001. Over 6500 people attended. He asked God to accept the temple. He hoped Uruguay would be blessed because of it. He wanted it to show the world the knowledge of God.

The Montevideo Uruguay Temple has a spire with a statue of the angel Moroni. The outside is made of asa branca granite. It is 10700 square feet. Inside are two ordinance rooms and two sealing rooms.

La Iglesia de Jesucristo continues to grow in Uruguay. It impacts many lives with its teachings. It provides a place for community and worship. The Montevideo Temple stands as a symbol of faith. It is a beacon of hope in the city. Remember the story of La Iglesia de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Últimos Días. It shows faith and growth in Uruguay.
