“A woman of nobility,” they say, started it all. Here we are at Lyngby Kirke. Its story is woven with legends and stone. This church dates back to the 1100s. It stands as a testament to faith and rivalry.

Lyngby Kirke began as a Romanesque structure. It was built from granite boulders. Gertrud and Gunni Albertsen, a wealthy farming couple, erected it back in 1143. Imagine their dedication. They envisioned a place of worship for their community.

But, according to legend, Gertrud had a jealous sister. She vowed to outdo her sister’s honorable deed. She declared she would build a wall around the cemetery. This wall would cost more than the church itself. And so she did. The wall’s dimensions were grand. Its cost barely exceeded that of the church. Remember, the original church was much smaller then. It lacked the tower, porch, and sacristy we see today.

Consider the granite portal at the south door. It is adorned with Romanesque carvings. Experts believe these carvings date back to the early 1100s. The ornamentation closely resembles that of Hasle Kirke. Perhaps the same stonemason crafted them both. These are possibly some of Denmark’s oldest stone churches.

Lyngby Kirke has undergone changes over the centuries. Gothic elements have been added. Both the tower and porch have crenelated end walls. The choir matches the ship in height and width. These additions reflect evolving architectural styles.

For centuries, Lyngby Kirke was annexed to Borum Kirke. Before the Reformation, Lyngby, like the rest of the village, belonged to Ring Kloster. This was a nunnery near Skanderborg. After the Reformation, the king took ownership. It changed hands a few times. In 1697, it came under the ownership of Lyngbygård.

Lyngby Kirke’s most recent renovation occurred in 1997. During this time, the old door between the choir and the old sacristy was opened. The sacristy now functions as both a chapel and sacristy. This created a more versatile space for worship and reflection.

Think about the people who have passed through these doors. They have worshipped here for centuries. They have found solace and community within these walls. Lyngby Kirke is more than just a building. It is a living testament to faith, history, and legend.

As you stand here, take a moment to appreciate the layers of history. Feel the weight of the stones. Lyngby Kirke continues to stand. It is a beacon of faith in this community. Its story continues to evolve with each passing year.
