Nestled within Rio de Janeiro’s vibrant Praça da Bandeira neighborhood, the Instituto Superior de Educação do Rio de Janeiro (ISERJ) has witnessed over a century of educational evolution. Originally established in 1880 as the Escola Normal da Corte, the ISERJ began its journey in a borrowed space within the prestigious Colégio Pedro II. Its early years were marked by a nomadic existence, moving from the Escola Politécnica to the building now housing Colégio Estadual Rivadavia Correa, and later to Escola Pedro Varela in Estácio. The yearning for a permanent home led to a design competition in 1928, resulting in the magnificent neocolonial structure we admire today. Designed by architects José Cortez and Angelo Bruhns, the building opened its doors in 1930, a beacon of hope amidst the turbulent political climate of the 1930 revolution. In 1932, under the leadership of Anísio Teixeira, the Escola Normal transformed into the Instituto de Educação do Rio de Janeiro. This marked a significant shift, expanding the institution’s scope to encompass pre-school, primary, and secondary education, alongside a higher education teacher training program. The ISERJ’s journey continued through various transformations, adapting to changing educational landscapes. Its name officially changed to Instituto Superior de Educação do Rio de Janeiro in 1998, reflecting its evolving role in higher education. Today, the ISERJ stands as a testament to its rich history. Its thick, soundproof classroom walls, spacious corridors, and unique architectural details, like the porcelain owls adorning the third-floor veranda, whisper tales of generations past. The central courtyard fountain provides a tranquil centerpiece, while the theater’s basement, with its unexpected swastika tile pattern, serves as a silent reminder of the complex historical context of its construction. ISERJ boasts a notable alumni list, including singer Anitta, poet Cecília Meireles, and football legend Zagallo, further solidifying its place in Rio’s cultural tapestry.
