Have you ever tasted wine from a place steeped in history? Welcome to Keltern a municipality in the Enzkreis district of Baden-Württemberg. Keltern isn’t just a name it’s a story woven into the very fabric of this land. Its five villages Dietenhausen Dietlingen Ellmendingen Niebelsbach and Weiler each hold centuries of secrets.
Imagine the year 827. The first written records appear for Dietenhausen. Centuries later in 919 Ellmendingen makes its debut in historical accounts. Dietlingen enters the scene sometime in the eleventh century. Weiler joins the narrative in 1219 and finally around 1300 Niebelsbach completes the quintet. Each village had its own unique identity its own history before they formed the Keltern we know today.
For centuries these villages existed independently. Most were part of Baden. In 1803 under the Grand Duchy of Baden they fell under Pforzheim’s jurisdiction. A major shift occurred in 1809 when district boundaries changed. The four villages Dietenhausen Dietlingen Ellmendingen and Weiler were assigned to the second Pforzheim Oberamt. Things were a little different for Niebelsbach. It found itself under Württemberg’s rule in 1806. This difference in governance reflects a fascinating aspect of Keltern’s history.
Then came a pivotal moment. On 30 March 1972 these five distinct entities merged. Keltern was born a new municipality uniting pasts both shared and distinct. This unification wasn’t immediate. Dietenhausen was incorporated into Ellmendingen in 1971. Then on 1 January 1973 the newly formed Keltern joined the Enz district. A new chapter began a testament to cooperation and shared identity.
Keltern’s coat of arms is itself a story. Approved in 1973 it’s a visual representation of the area’s rich viticultural heritage. A wine press symbolizes the historical significance of winemaking in Dietlingen and Ellmendingen. Clusters of grapes and a goblet complete the image reflecting the local wine tradition.
Keltern’s story isn’t just about its past. It’s also about the present. This area boasts a rich tapestry of vineyards and orchards. Numerous wineries produce award winning wines like the Müller-Thurgau and the Pinot noir and Pinot meunier. The landscape is picturesque a testament to the delicate balance between urban development and natural beauty. The area even houses the Rutronik Stars Keltern a women’s basketball team that has won multiple German championships.
