Perhaps, a seemingly ordinary plaque holds a story of faith. This is the Virgen de Luján Plaque. It marks a devotion that runs deep in Argentina’s heart. Let me tell you about the Virgen de Luján. She is Argentina’s patron saint. Her story began in 1630.

Antonio Farías de Sá, a Portuguese estate owner, wanted an image of Our Lady for his chapel. He lived in Sumampa. It is now part of Santiago del Estero. He asked a sailor friend in Brazil to send him a statue of Our Lady. The friend sent two statues. One depicted Mary. The other was of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception.

The statues arrived safely in Buenos Aires. They were placed on a cart to travel inland. When the caravan reached the Luján River, something strange happened. The cart carrying the statues would not move. Oxen strained. Men pushed. Nothing worked. Then they unloaded the image of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. Suddenly the cart moved easily.

The men saw this as a sign. Our Lady wanted to stay in Luján. So the image of the Immaculate Conception stayed. The other statue continued to Sumampa. The statue was dressed in blue and white robes. It was placed in a small chapel.

Miracles and healings began to occur. A man named “Negro Manuel” cared for the Virgin. He watched over her at the chapel for 40 years. His devotion became famous. In 1671, Doña Ana de Matos donated land. This allowed for a larger shrine. It also provided lodging for pilgrims. The settlement grew. By 1682, it became the City of Luján.

Our Lady of Luján continued to bless her people. Her feast day is celebrated on May 8. In 1887, Archbishop Federico León Aneiros placed a gold crown on her head. Pope Leo XII blessed the crown.

Many famous people have visited Our Lady of Luján. Manuel Belgrano visited the shrine three times. José San Martin visited in 1823. He was a leader of South America’s independence movement. Giovanni Mastai Ferreti visited in 1824. He later became Pope Pius IX. Saints like Francis Xavier Cabrini and Luigi Orione also made pilgrimages. In 1934, Cardinal Eugenio Pacelli visited Luján. He later became Pope Pius XII. Saint Josemaría Escrivá came in 1974. Pope Saint John Paul II visited in 1982. He brought a Golden Rose.

Father Carlos Miguel Buela once prayed at the basilica. He asked Our Lady of Luján to guide religious vocations. Later, he started “Project Luján” to promote devotion to her. Our Lady of Luján is the patroness of Argentina. She is also the patroness of the Institute of the Incarnate Word. The institute says that many blessings have come through her.

The Virgen de Luján Plaque is a reminder. It is a reminder of this story. It is a reminder of faith and devotion. It is a reminder of a miracle on the Luján River. Remember the story of the cart. Remember the devotion of Negro Manuel. Remember the blessings of Our Lady of Luján. The Virgen de Luján Plaque marks a place of deep spiritual significance. It connects us to a story that has touched countless lives.
