A sanctuary of peace stands before you. This is the Paróquia Bom Pastor a place steeped in history. Its story begins not with grand construction but with a convent. Around 1889 nuns of the Congregação de Nossa Senhora da Caridade do Bom Pastor Angers arrived. They established a convent on this very spot. These nuns were known for their charitable work. They focused on helping young pregnant girls. They provided spiritual and educational support.

The nuns built a chapel the seed of the current church. Over the years the convent’s work lessened. Fewer people attended services. In February 1987 the congregation requested the Archdiocese grant the Instituto Bom Pastor parish status. Their request was granted on February 26 1986. The Paróquia Bom Pastor was born. Its territory was carved from the parishes of Sagrados Corações and Santo Afonso. The current church building a testament to community efforts was constructed with funds from the congregation and local support. The exact construction duration remains unknown.

The Paróquia Bom Pastor boasts a predominantly Neo-Gothic style. Notice its pointed arches. The church sits elevated above the street. Its facade is simple yet elegant. It features a central doorway flanked by two smaller ones. Above are four arched windows the central two being smaller. A clerestory window with stained glass sits higher up. A cross crowns the structure.

Step inside. The nave is in the shape of a cross. The main altar is centrally located. Four smaller naves branch out like arms. All have flat ceilings. The sanctuary is elevated by three steps. A beautiful baldachin covers the altar. Rich red carpeting adorns the floor. A stunning balustrade encircles the area.

Explore the details. The first nave is the largest and holds a unique para-vento. Its stained glass features alternating images of a lamb a lily a cross and a Bible. Small colorful bas-reliefs depict the Stations of the Cross. The Good Shepherd statue stands on the left. To the right is an image of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. Additional chapels contain images of various saints. Each chapel has its own unique features. Many hold additional Stations of the Cross. The final chapel has a small gated door.
