How about stepping back in time to explore a church with a story etched in its very stones? Right here, in Lohfelden-Ochshausen, stands the Evangelische Kirche Ochshausen. This church isn’t just a building; it’s a testament to centuries of faith. It is also a resilience of the local community.

The Evangelische Kirche Ochshausen can accommodate up to 120 people for services. The church is part of the Kaufungen church district within the Evangelical Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck. Nestled on a small hill within a densely populated area, its location alone speaks volumes about its role as a central point for the community.

The story of Evangelische Kirche Ochshausen begins in the 11th century with a Romanesque chapel. However, this early sanctuary didn’t escape the ravages of time. During the Sternenkrieg in the 14th century, the chapel was destroyed. It lay in ruins until the second half of the 15th century. That’s when it was rebuilt as a small Gothic fieldstone church.

Major repairs were needed in the early 18th century. A plaque on the west side marks the completion of these repairs in 1734. The choir, located in the east, features a three-sided finish. A square, slate-covered roof turret rises from the church ship’s gable roof in the west. This is capped with a pyramid roof and houses the belfry behind the sound arches. Until the end of the 20th century, a timber-framed gable was visible. But today, it is covered with shingles.

Inside the Evangelische Kirche Ochshausen, a wooden beam ceiling spans the room. The church’s furnishings were largely renewed in 1947 and 1956. Yet, some older elements remain. The octagonal, Romanesque baptismal font, inherited from the old chapel, has been preserved. The stained glass windows by Heinz Kreutz are considered particularly noteworthy.

The building has undergone numerous conversions and renovations since its construction. These have left traces on the masonry. Careful observation allows conclusions to be drawn about the church’s architectural history. Construction joints on the long walls suggest that the church building is Romanesque at its core. The conversion to a Gothic hall church took place around 1496/98. The inscription stone next to the present entrance testifies to further conversions. These were completed in 1734. From 1945 onwards, the interior was transformed from a transverse hall into its present form.

Today, the Evangelische Kirche Ochshausen stands as a unique blend of architectural styles and historical periods. It is a place where the echoes of the past resonate. It is also a living testament to the enduring spirit of the community. As you stand before this building, consider the countless lives touched by its presence. Consider the stories whispered within its walls over the centuries. It is more than just a church. It is a landmark, a sanctuary, and a piece of Lohfelden-Ochshausen’s heart.
