Journey back to 1845. Imagine Chinese immigrants from Fujian province, arriving in Penang with hopes and dreams. They yearned for a spiritual anchor in their new home. They established the Hock Teik Soo temple on Armenian Street. Hock Teik Soo became a beacon of their traditions and a testament to their resilience. The temple is dedicated to Tua Pek Kong, the Taoist god of prosperity. This deity holds a special place in the hearts of the Hokkien community. The Hock Teik Soo’s architecture is a marvel. The roof figurines and the ‘no nails’ bracket system for the tilting roof showcase the ingenuity of the builders. Look for the Kuan Kong figurine on the roof, a symbol of loyalty and a unique feature in Malaysia. The temple’s bungalow-style layout was quite unusual for the early 1800s. The Hock Teik Soo also served as a meeting place. The Kean Teik Tong society found refuge here after clan associations were banned following the Penang Riots of 1867. Today, the temple is also known as Poh Hock Seah. Inside, admire the rich russet lacquered finish, vibrant paintings and symbolic sculptures. Discover the multi-hued ceramic and stucco figurines. Explore the different altars, including the Altar to Sin Long Siang Tay, the Tua Pek Kong Hall and the altar to Cheng Chooi Chor Soo. The Hock Teik Soo temple stands as a symbol of community, faith and cultural preservation in the heart of George Town.
