“Did anyone bring their hiking boots?” a voice chuckled, breaking the silence as we admired the rugged landscape. Our destination: the Fort of Zambujal, also known as the Fort of Casas Velhas. Now, I know what you’re thinking – another fort? But trust me, this one has a story to tell, a story woven into the very fabric of Portugal’s fight for freedom. Perched high above us, the Fort of Zambujal isn’t just a collection of old stones, it’s a testament to a time when Napoleon’s shadow loomed large over Europe. The year was 1809. The Peninsular War raged, and Portugal, caught in the crossfire, needed a shield. This shield, my friends, was the Lines of Torres Vedras, a network of forts and defences masterminded by the legendary Duke of Wellington. Our Fort of Zambujal, standing proud at number 95, formed a vital link in this chain of resistance. Imagine, if you will, 250 soldiers stationed here, their eyes scanning the horizon, the roar of cannons echoing through the valley. The fort, built into the rock itself, was a fortress designed to halt the French advance. And halt it did! The French, despite their best efforts, could not break through the Lines of Torres Vedras, and eventually retreated. Today, the Fort of Zambujal stands as a silent guardian, a reminder of Portugal’s resilience and the strategic brilliance of Wellington’s defence.
