Hidden amidst the urban sprawl of Aarhus lies Mollerup Skov, a relatively young woodland with a fascinating story to tell. Mollerup Skov isn’t your ancient, towering forest. It’s a vibrant, almost rebellious burst of green. Aarhus Kommune embarked on an ambitious plan in 1988 called “Aarhus surrounded by forest.” The goal? To double the municipality’s forested area by 2000. Mollerup Skov, purchased between 1993 and 1997, became a vital part of this green initiative. Today, Mollerup Skov spans 97 hectares. Imagine strolling beneath a canopy of beech, oak, ash, and cherry trees. The forest floor is a patchwork of light and shadow, where sunlight dapples through the leaves. Open fields and meadows punctuate the trees, offering breathtaking views across Egådalen valley and the shimmering waters of Egå Engsø. Keep an eye out for the local inhabitants. Roe deer dart through the undergrowth. Foxes slink through the shadows. Hares bound across the meadows. Overhead, the air is alive with birdsong. Pheasants strut their colorful plumage, blackbirds trill their melodies, and siskins flit amongst the branches. Birds of prey, such as sparrowhawks and buzzards, patrol the skies, keeping a watchful eye on the forest below. While exploring the network of paths crisscrossing Mollerup Skov, remember to respect the wildlife and refrain from feeding them. Two marked routes, one red and one yellow, guide you through the forest. The red route stretches for approximately 3 kilometers, while the yellow route offers a shorter 2-kilometer stroll. For our canine companions, a dedicated fenced dog park provides a safe space to run and play. These “hundeskove,” or dog forests, are a common sight throughout Denmark, offering a harmonious blend of nature and recreation. Mollerup Skov stands as a testament to Aarhus’s commitment to creating green spaces within its urban landscape. A peaceful haven just a stone’s throw from the city’s hustle and bustle, inviting you to reconnect with nature and explore its hidden wonders.
