Bremen has a special feature. It has the lowest high point of all German states. Today our story centers around Weyerdamm. But wait where exactly are we?

Weyerdamm is located within the larger city of Bremen. Bremen is a city with a rich history. For most of its 1200-year history, Bremen was an independent city. It was within the confederal jurisdiction of the Holy Roman Empire. Bremen’s merchants and guilds were central to the Hanseatic League. The league aimed to control North Sea and Baltic Sea trade.

To maintain independence, Bremen had to contend with the Church. After the Thirty Years’ War, it faced Sweden. Sweden controlled the surrounding Duchy of Bremen-Verden. In 1715, George 1 Louis acquired Bremen-Verden. He was the Elector of Hannover. He later became King of Great Britain and Ireland. In 1720, he recognized Bremen as a free city.

France captured Bremen in 1806. They then annexed it in 1810. Bremen regained independence in 1815. In 1871, Prussia drew Bremen into the German Empire. Bremen became a major port for emigrants to the Americas. It was also an entrepôt for Germany’s colonial trade.

Bremen experienced a period of autonomy. However, it lost it under the Hitler regime. During World War II, the city was devastated. Almost two-thirds of its fabric was destroyed. After the war, autonomy was restored. Bremen became a founding state of West Germany.

Bremen lies on the River Weser. It is about 60 kilometers upstream from the North Sea. The city’s municipal area is roughly 38 kilometers long and 16 kilometers wide. Bremen is the eleventh largest city in Germany. It has a moderate oceanic climate. This is influenced by the North Sea and westerly winds.

The city is known for the Town Musicians of Bremen. This tale by the Brothers Grimm features a donkey, dog, cat, and rooster. A statue dedicated to the story stands in front of the city hall. Bremen is a major cultural and economic hub. It has many historical galleries and museums. These include the Bremen Overseas Museum and the Weserburg.
