Did you know Hacı Nimet Özden Camii is also known as Nimet Abla Camii? It stands in Istanbul’s Esentepe neighborhood since 1963. Hacı Nimet Özden Camii is more than just a place of worship. It represents a legacy of generosity.
Hacı Nimet Özden, a visionary woman, commissioned its construction. She financed the entire project without any external financial assistance. She created not only a mosque. She also envisioned a complex serving the community. The complex includes shops at the entrance along the main street. There are also two buildings with annexes in the back garden to be used as outbuildings.
But Hacı Nimet Özden’s vision extended far beyond bricks and mortar. In 1970, she established the Hacı Nimet Özden Camii Yaşatma Derneği. It translates to Hacı Nimet Özden Camii Preservation Association. A year later, in 1971, she founded the Hacı Nimet Özden Camii Şerifleri Vakfı. This is the Hacı Nimet Özden Camii and Sharifs Foundation.
Her foundation’s board included prominent figures. Among them were the Governor of Istanbul and the Mayor of Istanbul. Also on the board were the Mufti of Istanbul and the Director of Istanbul Foundations. The President of the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce and the President of the Istanbul Chamber of Industry were there too. The President of the Istanbul Bar Association completed the board.
Hacı Nimet Özden dedicated her entire fortune to the foundation. Even today, the foundation’s real estate generates income. This income supports the education of around 200 children in various schools. Her commitment to education transformed lives and shaped futures.
The Hacı Nimet Özden Camii stands as a testament to her vision. It embodies architectural beauty and community spirit. It serves as a reminder of one woman’s dedication to her faith and her community. Her legacy continues to inspire generations. It is a beacon of hope and a symbol of enduring generosity.
