Nestled between bustling Gothersgade and Nørre Farimagsgade stands Sankt Andreas Kirke. It’s a quiet sanctuary amidst the city’s vibrant energy. Sankt Andreas Kirke isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a time capsule, whispering tales of Copenhagen’s past. Built between 1897 and 1901, Sankt Andreas Kirke showcases the Romanesque Revival style. Its red brick facade and elegant embellishments hint at the artistry within. Architect Martin Borch envisioned a church that echoed the grandeur of Denmark’s medieval architectural heritage. The church’s location presented a unique challenge. The corner plot was quite small. Borch cleverly positioned the choir to the west of the tower. This allowed the tower to stand prominently at the intersection. It acts as a beacon, drawing eyes to Sankt Andreas Kirke. The main entrance, facing Østre Farimagsgade, features a magnificent portal. Sculptor Anders Bundgaard crafted the imposing lions that guard the entryway. Inside, the late Romanesque style continues, mirroring the aesthetic of the neighboring Kommunehospitalet. Interestingly, the church’s construction was considered somewhat extravagant for its time. Hand-struck bricks, laid in the medieval style, added to the cost. A quirky anecdote recounts how Borch allowed chickens to walk on the newly laid bricks, their tiny feet creating unique patterns. Originally part of Sankt Johannes Sogn, Sankt Andreas Kirke emerged from the need for a dedicated place of worship for the growing population in the voldkvarteret. Pastor Julius Steen spearheaded a fundraising campaign, ensuring the church’s realization. Today, Sankt Andreas Kirke is part of Vor Frue Kirkes sogn, its history intertwined with the city’s growth and spiritual life. The church offers a tranquil escape from the urban hustle, a place to connect with history and find a moment of peace.
