“A grand sanctuary,” I began, my voice echoing slightly in the bustling Jakarta air, “stands before us: Masjid Raya Uswatun Hasanah.” This mosque, a beacon of faith on Jalan Daan Mogot, holds a unique story. Masjid Raya Uswatun Hasanah is more than just a place of worship. It is a vibrant hub woven into the fabric of Jakarta’s community. In 2021, Masjid Raya Uswatun Hasanah launched a heartwarming initiative, a free marriage program. This wasn’t just a simple ceremony. The mosque provided a dowry and a small reception. This act of generosity opened doors for couples who may have otherwise struggled to afford a wedding. This program, now in its third year, started in 2019 with a goal of 20 couples. While only eight participated then, the mosque’s commitment to community remains strong. The program isn’t limited to Jakarta residents. Couples from other areas can participate if they meet the KUA (Religious Affairs Office) requirements, including a letter of permission for marriage. Masjid Raya Uswatun Hasanah’s dedication extends beyond weddings. The mosque also hosts regular Islamic study sessions. Ustadz Muharma, Lc, M.Pd.I leads a session every second Friday after Maghrib prayer. He delves into the teachings of “Kitab Tauhid,” written by Sheikh Muhammad at-Tamimi. This provides a space for spiritual growth and understanding within the community. In 2022, Masjid Raya Uswatun Hasanah joined with Muhammadiyah in observing Idul Adha. This decision, though different from the government’s, demonstrated the mosque’s alignment with this Islamic organization. Around 1,000 worshippers gathered, united in prayer, marking a significant moment for the community. From free marriages to enriching study sessions and communal prayers, Masjid Raya Uswatun Hasanah stands as a testament to faith and community in the heart of Jakarta. It serves not just as a place of worship but as a pillar of support and a center for learning and connection.
