Hidden within the bustling city, The Liberal Jewish Synagogue stands as a beacon of progressive Judaism. Did you know it’s the oldest and largest of its kind in the UK? The Liberal Jewish Synagogue, often called the LJS, first opened its doors in 1911 in a converted chapel on Hill Street. The congregation quickly outgrew this space. By 1925, a grand new home on St. John’s Wood Road was dedicated. This magnificent building, designed by Ernest Joseph, could hold an astounding 1,400 worshippers. The Liberal Jewish Synagogue has a rich history, shaped by influential figures like Claude Montefiore, Lily Montagu, and Rabbi Dr. Israel Mattuck. These three, known as the “Three Ms,” guided the synagogue in its formative years. Sadly, tragedy struck during the Blitz in 1940 when a bomb severely damaged the building. The resilient community restored their spiritual home, reopening it in 1951. However, structural issues later necessitated a significant rebuild. The current edifice, opened in 1991, retains the original portico as a link to the past. Inside, you’ll find Jerusalem stone lining the sanctuary and a striking metal mesh ark. The Liberal Jewish Synagogue is not just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant community hub, hosting a nursery school, a religion school, adult education programs, and community care initiatives. It has a long history of supporting refugees, from those fleeing Nazi Germany to Soviet refuseniks. The synagogue’s library, named after Israel Abrahams, boasts over 6,000 books, a testament to the community’s dedication to learning. The Liberal Jewish Synagogue continues to thrive, a testament to the enduring spirit of Liberal Judaism in London.
