Thornton Fractional South High School’s journey began in a time of growth. Post-World War II, the Lansing and Lynwood communities expanded. The existing Thornton Fractional Township High School couldn’t accommodate the booming student population. In 1958, Thornton Fractional South High School opened its doors. It welcomed students living south of 159th Street for the second semester of that year. Initially, Thornton Fractional South High School had about 1,000 students. Now it serves around 2,000 students from Lansing and Lynwood. The school’s colors are red and gray. Its mascot, originally the Rebels, became the Red Wolves in 2022. The school has a rich history of athletic and academic achievements. The girls’ badminton team clinched state championships in 2012-13 and 2013-14. The girls’ bowling team won the state championship in 1989-90. Thornton Fractional South High School has also excelled in drama, group interpretation, speech, and even eSports, with the Rocket League team winning the state championship in 2023-24. Several notable alumni have graduated from Thornton Fractional South. These include Major League Baseball player Curtis Granderson, L7 drummer Demetra Plakas, and television journalist Harry Smith. NFL players Pierre Thomas, Tom Baldwin, and Ken Kremer also walked these halls, along with actor Jim O’Heir, known for his role in “Parks and Recreation”. Thornton Fractional South High School continues to serve its community. It provides a quality education and fosters a spirit of competition and creativity.
