Tucked away in Lyon, Avenue Debrousse whispers tales of generosity and transformation. Avenue Debrousse begins its journey with a curve in the ascent of Montée de Choulans, at the junction of Rue des Trois Artichauts. This avenue extends to the edge of Sainte Foy, where it continues as Avenue Valioud. The first part of Avenue Debrousse serves as a section of the road between Perrache and Saint Irénée. Then it winds westward between Montée de Choulans and Montée de la Première DFL. It boasts two lanes in each direction. The eastern side overlooks Rue des Trois Artichauts and offers stunning views of eastern Lyon. A staircase descends to Montée Saint Laurent. The second part of Avenue Debrousse offers a more tranquil path towards Sainte Foy. It meanders along the hillside, nestled amidst greenery and the remnants of old property walls. Peeking through the gaps in these walls reveals glimpses of buildings and elegant houses. Breathtaking views, particularly of the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers, reward those who venture further along. For those seeking a shorter route, the Montée du Petit Sainte Foy climbs via steps up to Rue Clemenceau, which extends from Rue Sœur Bouvier. Traveling towards Sainte Foy, this route is designated as D125. The avenue is named after the Debrousse family. They were landowners in this part of the city and were recognized as benefactors of Lyon. Their contribution was the creation of a hospice for the elderly. Félicie Dessans, widow of Debrousse, donated the land to build the hospital, which is situated just above. Before bearing the name Avenue Debrousse, this route was known as Chemin de Sainte Foy and Avenue Valioud. Avenue Debrousse came into existence in 1872, connecting Sainte Foy and Saint Irénée. The land for the hospital was granted to the city of Lyon in 1913. The initial section of the avenue was widened around 1974. The hospice, constructed in 1909, later served as a pediatric hospital and a renowned maternity hospital from 1918. Interestingly, to see the hospital, one must ascend Rue Sœur Bouvier. From Avenue Debrousse, only a small tower is visible. The hospital closed its doors in March 2008. The main building is slated to be transformed into a hotel, and the garden will be open for strolling once the renovations are complete. As of 2016, construction was well underway and clearly visible from the street, but a gate restricts access.
