Lost in thought I wonder what it must have been like here in 1854. That was the year Kings Domain was established. This expansive parkland is in the heart of Melbourne. Kings Domain is part of the Domain Parklands. The other parks are the Royal Botanic Gardens, Alexandra Gardens and Queen Victoria Gardens.

Kings Domain offers a peaceful escape. It is a retreat from Melbourne’s busy city center. Covering 36 hectares it features beautiful lawns and pathways. They offer a contrast to the surrounding urban streets. Native trees and picturesque statues dot the landscape. They stand guard over pretty flowers.

The Director of the Botanic Gardens managed Kings Domain in the 19th century. Many trees and plants were installed. A large majority still stand here to this day.

The Sidney Myer Music Bowl is within Kings Domain. It is a world-famous outdoor music venue. Prime Minister Robert Menzies opened it in 1959. Locals now enjoy seeing rising talent perform here.

The Shrine of Remembrance is one of Australia’s largest war memorials. It remembers the men and women of Victoria who died in World War I. It soon became a memorial to all Australians who served in war.

Government House is also in Kings Domain. It is the official residence of Victoria’s Governor. Built in the 1870s it has an Italianate style. Its design reflects the gold rush economy.

La Trobe’s Cottage dates back to 1839. It was built for the first superintendent of the Port Phillip District. The cottage was made using prefabricated materials from England. It offers a look into early colonial architecture and domestic life.

Kings Domain Resting Place is a memorial for Indigenous People. It honors the Aboriginal People of Victoria including the local Wurundjeri. The remains of 38 Aboriginal People are buried here. The Melbourne Museum handed them over to the Aboriginal Community in 1985.

The Pioneer Women’s Memorial Garden is here. Hugh Linaker designed it. It pays tribute to the European pioneer women of the colony. The garden has a sunken area. It includes a blue-tiled grotto with a bronze figure of a woman. It opened in 1935.

Several statues are located within Kings Domain. There is a statue of Sir John Monash. He was the Commander in Chief of the Australian Forces during World War I. William Leslie Bowles created the bronze equestrian statue.

A statue of Sir Thomas Blamey stands at Government House Drive and Birdwood Avenue. Raymond B Ewers sculpted it. It recognizes Australia’s first Field Marshal.

There is also a statue of Weary Dunlop. Peter Corlett created it from bronze, granite, and metal spikes. These spikes are from the Burma-Thailand Railway. Weary Dunlop was a courageous leader and doctor.

The memorial to King George V was created by William Leslie Bowles. World War II delayed the construction. It was completed in 1951.

The Walker Fountain features a small lake. Hundreds of streams of water flow within it. Underwater lights add to its beauty. Ron Walker, Lord Mayor of Melbourne, donated it in 1981.

Today Kings Domain continues to offer a space for reflection. It is a place to remember and appreciate Melbourne’s history and natural beauty. Take some time to simply soak in the scenery.
