Have you ever wondered what “mustachoes” have to do with a charming Australian town? Yarragon, nestled in the West Gippsland region of Victoria, Australia, may hold the answer. The name Yarragon, it’s believed, is derived from the Aboriginal word “Yarragondock,” meaning “mustachoes.” Perhaps a playful nod to the area once known as “Little Moe.” Yarragon sits on the Princes Highway and the Gippsland railway line, almost exactly between Warragul and Moe. The Strzelecki Ranges rise dramatically to the south. The Moe River flows peacefully to the north. Yarragon is a town of contrasts, blending natural beauty with a rich history. Established around 1878, initially as “Waterloo,” the town was renamed Yarragon in 1883 due to postal confusion with another town of the same name. Yarragon quickly became a hub for dairy farms and logging activities. The old dairy factory north of the railway line stands as a testament to this era. The towering trees of the Strzelecki Ranges provided ample work for sawmills and paling splitters. Ingenuity flourished. Tramways were built across the marshy lands to transport timber and produce to the Yarragon railway station. Even brown coal, discovered in 1888, briefly fueled dreams of industrial expansion. While the timber boom eventually subsided, Yarragon found new life with the draining of the Moe swamp in the late 1800s. This project not only brought new residents but also transformed the landscape, paving the way for further agricultural development. Today, Yarragon thrives as “Yarragon Village.” It’s a popular stop for tourists traveling the Princes Highway, drawn by its unique blend of old and new. Antique shops, craft stores, galleries, and cafes line the main street, offering a diverse array of treasures and treats. The town retains its village charm, enhanced by attractive gardens, pathways, and a large rotunda that provides a peaceful respite from the busy highway. Yarragon’s history is etched into its streets, named after Victorian Governors and local pioneers. The population, around 1,900 as of 2021, continues to grow. The town is a testament to its resilient spirit. It transformed from a small railway stop to a bustling village, embracing change while preserving its unique charm. Yarragon offers a glimpse into Australia’s past. It holds the promise of a vibrant future. It’s a place where mustaches might just be the key to unlocking a captivating story.
