Did you know that Büyükdere once boasted a bustling ferry terminal? Today Büyükdere Mahallesi a charming neighborhood in Sarıyer Istanbul whispers tales of its vibrant past. Nestled on the European shore of the Bosphorus strait Büyükdere means ‘big stream’ in Turkish a nod to the river that once flowed into the Bosphorus here.

In the 19th century Büyükdere became a sought-after summer retreat for Istanbul’s foreign and diplomatic communities. Wealthy families and diplomats built grand mansions. These buildings are still standing many serving as embassies or hotels. Several beautiful churches remain too. These include the Greek Orthodox Ayia Paraskevi Church the Latin Catholic Italian Santa Maria Church an Armenian Catholic church and an Armenian Apostolic church. Each church boasts unique architecture reflecting its distinct heritage. The Kara Kethüda Mosque a testament to the area’s diverse religious landscape dates back to the 18th century.

The Sadberk Hanım Museum originally housed in a beautiful Ottoman-era mansion is another point of interest in Büyükdere Mahallesi. The museum showcasing archaeology and ethnography was a private collection of the wealthy Koç family. It is now scheduled to open at a new location. This move is part of the ambitious Haliçport project.

Büyükdere Mahallesi also holds significant historical importance beyond its beautiful architecture. The Turkish Coast Guard’s Regional Command for the Marmara Sea and the Turkish Straits has its headquarters here. The headquarters occupies a stunning hunting lodge originally built for Mehmed VI the last Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. Coast Guard vessels are often docked at Büyükdere Pier. The neighborhood also houses a primary school and a vocational high school for girls.

Notable residents of Büyükdere throughout history have added to its captivating story. Hayreddin Barbarossa the famous 16th-century pirate once called Büyükdere home. Anastasia Georgiadou a celebrated Greek singer known as ‘Deniz Kızı Eftalya’ (‘Efthalia the Mermaid’) also lived here. The Russian ambassador Count Nikolay Ignatyev and Keçecizade Fuat Paşa the 19th-century grand vizier are also associated with Büyükdere adding to its rich and layered history.

Büyükdere Mahallesi isn’t just a neighborhood. It’s a living museum a blend of history culture and modern life. Its story continues to unfold on the banks of the Bosphorus. Let the captivating atmosphere of Büyükdere Mahallesi linger in your memories long after our tour ends.
