Hidden beneath the gaze of Bremerhaven, Loxstedt whispers tales spanning centuries. Loxstedt first appeared in records as “Lacstidi” in 1059, meaning “in lake stead”. This reveals its intimate connection with the surrounding waters. Originally part of the Duchy of Saxony, Loxstedt’s fate intertwined with the Prince-Archbishopric of Bremen in 1180. The winds of the Reformation swept through Loxstedt in the mid-16th century, leading its inhabitants to embrace Lutheranism. A period of turmoil followed during the Thirty Years’ War, with Tilly’s Leaguist forces attempting to reimpose Catholicism upon the steadfastly Protestant community of Loxstedt. Through the centuries, Loxstedt witnessed the ebb and flow of power. It saw the Duchy of Bremen’s transformation under Swedish rule, punctuated by a Danish interlude. Later, it fell under the Hanoverian Crown and even briefly became part of the Kingdom of Westphalia and then France, before returning to Hanover in 1813. In 1974, Loxstedt expanded its embrace. Several neighboring villages, including Büttel, Dedesdorf, Eidewarden, Maihausen, Overwarfe, Ueterlande, and Wiemsdorf, became part of the Loxstedt community. These villages, with their own unique stories and histories, enrich the tapestry of Loxstedt’s heritage. Today, Loxstedt stands as a testament to its enduring spirit. Its 20 constituent villages contribute to a vibrant community. The municipality thrives with convenient access to the A27 autobahn and the Bremen-Bremerhaven railway line.
