In 1913, a new street was etched into the Parisian landscape. This street, Rue Henri Dubouillon, stands as a testament to the vision of one man. Rue Henri Dubouillon is nestled in the 20th arrondissement, connecting Rue Haxo to Avenue Gambetta. This isn’t just any street. It’s a time capsule, reflecting the architectural prowess of Henri Dubouillon, the man who lent his name to this charming pathway. Born in December 1887, just a stone’s throw away at 12 Cour des Noues, Dubouillon’s journey from apprentice mason to renowned architect is a Parisian tale in itself. His father, a butter merchant, likely never imagined his son would shape the very fabric of the city. After honing his skills at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs, the young Dubouillon quickly made his mark. Starting in the nearby town of Les Lilas, he soon turned his attention to the 20th arrondissement. He became a trusted expert for La Bellevilloise and his own company, Le XXe Immobilier. Rue Henri Dubouillon embodies his vision. The eight buildings, erected between 1913 and 1914, showcase a distinctive architectural style. Built with reinforced concrete and adorned with a brick facade, their rounded corners soften their imposing presence. These buildings offer a glimpse into the bourgeois style prevalent at the beginning of the 20th century. Imagine Dubouillon, at the young age of 27, seeing a street named after him, lined with his own creations. This street was built on land he owned. He further contributed to the district with buildings on Rue Dupont-de-l’Eure. Dubouillon eventually moved to the 16th arrondissement, but his legacy remains firmly rooted in the 20th, in the street that bears his name. There’s even a proposal to pedestrianize and further cultivate the greenery on Rue Henri Dubouillon, continuing its evolution as a vibrant part of Paris.
