In 2011 the Johanneskirche celebrated its 75th anniversary. This beautiful church in Bremerhaven stands proudly. Its patron saint is John the Evangelist. Old records frequently refer to it as St Johannis. But our congregation always embraced modernity. We wanted to share the Gospel’s message with the people of today. So we quickly dropped the Latin genitive.

The Johanneskirche boasts stunning stained-glass windows. They are the work of the renowned artist Johannes Schreiter. His older brother Gerhard crafted the church’s magnificent crucifix. From the very first time I saw the church I loved its acoustics. The warm light filtering through the windows is captivating. Speaking in this resonant space is truly amazing. Since 2003 I’ve celebrated many services here. I’ve also enjoyed wonderful concerts.

My first sermon here began with a question. It was John the Baptist’s question: Is Jesus the expected Messiah? This question resonates with the Johanneskirche’s history. People have always come here to seek God. Critical questions were also welcome. John’s question reflects anxiety yet hope. It’s a searching question that refuses to let go: Are you the one who is to come? (Matthew 113)

Much has changed over the years. There have been challenges and breakthroughs. May we too succeed in creating a space for encounters with God in this beautiful church. For the people of today. Pastor Sebastian Ritter’s words echo through the years. The Johanneskirche remains a beacon of faith and community in Bremerhaven.
