Did you ever imagine a bustling airport transforming into a seaport? The Ehem. Regionalflughafen Bremerhaven, once a hub of air travel, now stands as a silent testament to Bremerhaven’s evolving needs. This former regional airfield, also known as Bremerhaven-Luneort Airport (IATA: BRV, ICAO: EDWB), rests in Luneort, a district of Bremerhaven, Germany. The Ehem. Regionalflughafen Bremerhaven was more than just a place for planes to land and take off. It was a gateway to the world for Bremerhaven, connecting this maritime city to destinations near and far. Established in 1956, the airfield initially served the gliding activities of the Luftsportverein Unterweser. It wasn’t until 1959 that it welcomed motorized flights, primarily used by the Aero-Club Bremerhaven. The Ehem. Regionalflughafen Bremerhaven saw significant expansion in 1991, transforming from a local airfield to a regional airport. This upgrade included extending the runway, installing modern lighting, and adding a sophisticated navigation system. This allowed for increased traffic and even night flights. However, despite these advancements, the Ehem. Regionalflughafen Bremerhaven primarily served general aviation and leisure flying. The airport even had seven hangars dedicated to aircraft storage and maintenance, with plans for further expansion. Tragically, in 2001, an accident involving a Britten-Norman BN-2B-26 aircraft cast a shadow over the airport’s history, leading to a decline in passenger numbers and eventual closure of the route to Wangerooge. The Ehem. Regionalflughafen Bremerhaven ultimately closed its doors on February 29, 2016. The decision was made to repurpose the land for a new freight seaport, reflecting the city’s focus on maritime trade. Today, the site of the Ehem. Regionalflughafen Bremerhaven stands in quiet anticipation of its next chapter, a poignant reminder of Bremerhaven’s ever-changing landscape.
