High above the bustling Bremerhaven harbor stands the Container-Turm. It’s not just any tower. This unique structure is made entirely of stacked shipping containers.

The Container-Turm isn’t just a pretty sight. It’s a testament to Bremerhaven’s importance as a major container port. Built in 1979 by the Bremerhaven-Wesermünde Tourist Association it showcases the city’s role in global trade. Over 100 companies contributed money and materials to its construction. The 12 brightly colored containers arranged in a square are more than just a structure. They are a symbol of Bremerhaven’s thriving container industry.

From this vantage point you can see the vast container terminal. Huge cranes move containers with effortless grace. Auto transport ships dwarf everything else. The historical swing bridge is visible too. Even the cruise ship terminal is within sight. A powerful pair of binoculars helps you spot the details of ships maneuvering through the Nordschleuse. A glass-covered map provides up-to-date information. It’s constantly updated to show you what’s happening around you. You learn about the different harbor areas and their functions. It’s a free observation tower with free parking nearby.

The Container-Turm is more than just a viewpoint. It’s a weatherproof place to watch the activity of the harbor. It’s open all year round but during winter it may be closed due to ice or other conditions. You can witness ships being loaded and unloaded. It’s a perfect spot for photos and filming. This is a fantastic family outing. Children love watching the giant ocean liners and car carriers. It’s easy to access by stairs and also suitable for people with limited mobility.

Remember to bring your ID. You might be checked at the customs port. Especially if entering or leaving the port area. As evening descends the busy harbor takes on a magical quality. The Container-Turm offers a unique perspective on Bremerhaven’s vibrant port life. A sight you will not soon forget.
