Huizhong Chapel wasn’t always this impressive structure. It first opened in 1904. Seventh Day Baptist missionaries founded it. The 30th year of the Guangxu era saw its humble beginnings. The chapel played a vital role in the community. It served as a center for worship and spiritual guidance.
For decades Huizhong Chapel thrived. However times changed. In 1958 it transitioned to general Protestant worship. Zhuang Shulian led the congregation during this period. The Cultural Revolution brought a tragic halt to religious activities throughout Shanghai. Red Guard students from Wu’ai School occupied the church site. Sadly the chapel collapsed after the Cultural Revolution ended.
But the story of Huizhong Chapel didn’t end there. It was rebuilt. The reconstruction started in 1996 and was completed the following year. Today’s Huizhong Chapel is a beautiful three and a half story building. Its first two floors comfortably accommodate 500 worshippers. The third floor can hold 300 more. In 2018 the congregation organized a bazaar to raise funds for children in need. It is a vivid example of the church’s commitment to its community. The chapel’s stained glass windows and Nestorian cross pews speak volumes about its rich heritage. Its plaque designates it as a protected monument. This beautiful building stands as a beacon of hope and faith. It continues its important work serving the community. Huizhong Chapel is more than just a building.
