Isn’t that salty air invigorating? Welcome to the Schaufenster Fischereihafen. This isn’t just any harbor. It’s a vibrant testament to Bremerhaven’s fishing legacy.

Once upon a time, this was Geestemünde’s old high-sea fishing port. Imagine the years between 1891 and 1896. Up to 15 fishing vessels unloaded their catch right here at the quays. The fishing industry boomed. Expansion became essential. Yet, the harbor eventually reached its limits. Fishing activities shifted to a newer, larger location. This area slowly declined.

But, in the late 1990s, a vision took hold. Why not transform this unused space into a maritime attraction? The Schaufenster Fischereihafen project was born. Its goal was clear. Show both tourists and locals the inner workings of the fishing industry. Increase fish consumption.

One of the first steps was restoring Packhalle IV in 1991. This oldest surviving packing hall became the heart of the Schaufenster Fischereihafen. Today, Packhalle IV is filled with restaurants offering fresh seafood. You can enjoy a meal in a maritime atmosphere.

The Fischbahnhof, or Fish Train Station, joined the Schaufenster Fischereihafen in 1996. Its design echoes the original fish dispatch station using its steel structure.

Here, at the Schaufenster Fischereihafen, the past and present blend seamlessly. Before you stands Fiedlers Fischerdorf. This is a collection of wooden huts recreating a fishing village from around 1900. You can explore the village.

Look around and you might catch a whiff of Fischräucherei Franke. They offer freshly smoked fish. The aroma alone is worth the visit.

From April to August, the Marktplatz bursts with life. It hosts open-air concerts and themed markets. There is even the legendary Fischparty.

Take a look at the harbor basin. Ships bob gently creating an authentic scene. The MS HANSA, a former potato ship, now serves as a restaurant. You can also spot the museum ship FMS GERA. The Krabbenkutter STEINBOCK and MS DORSCH offer harbor tours.

Don’t miss PHÄNOMENTA. This science center in the former spice warehouse is great for families. It explores natural phenomena through interactive exhibits.

Each year, around 500,000 visitors enjoy the Schaufenster Fischereihafen. They come for the charm, the fresh fish, and the events.

The Schaufenster Fischereihafen stands as a reminder of Bremerhaven’s fishing heritage. It is a place where history, culture, and culinary delights come together. As you explore, remember the vision that transformed this area. It is thanks to the Schaufenster Fischereihafen that tourists from all over the world can get a taste of the fishing industry. It is still one of the most important locations for fish in Europe.
