Keep an eye out for the tower’s local nickname the Sektkelch. This translates to “Champagne Glass”. It is due to the single, red cone on top.
The Unterfeuer Fischereihafen/Geestemünde boasts impressive stats. The light stands 11 meters tall above the dike. Its light is visible for 18 nautical miles as Unterfeuer Fischereihafen. For Unterfeuer Geestemünde it is 11 nautical miles. The light sits at a height of 17 meters. The tower was officially named Unterfeuer Fischereihafen/Geestemünde in 1973.
Originally, a smaller light stood here from 1925. But as the Weser deepened, larger, more powerful lights were needed. The original tower dates back to 1896. It was moved slightly north from this location. Sadly, it wasn’t preserved.
To guide ships upriver, the Unterfeuer Fischereihafen/Geestemünde aligns with the Oberfeuer Fischereihafen. This Oberfeuer stands 1280 meters away at the Fischkai. The Oberfeuer Fischereihafen is easily spotted. It is a red and white striped tower. It features two red cones on top. Locals fondly call it Doppelkorn. This translates to “double grain”.
For ships heading downriver, the Unterfeuer Fischereihafen/Geestemünde partners with the Oberfeuer Geestemünde. That light is 340 meters away near the Handelshafen and the double lock.
Navigating the Weser is complex. The Blexen Bend requires precision. These lights provide that.
The lights are visible only when ships are directly in the line of safe passage.
The Unterfeuer Fischereihafen/Geestemünde’s light characteristic changed in September 2021. It changed from “Oc 6 s” to “F W”.
