Navigating the bustling heart of Marseille, we find ourselves on Rue Consolat. This street stretches between two worlds, nestled within the 1st and 4th arrondissements. Rue Consolat isn’t just a street. It’s a pathway echoing the ambition of a man who dared to quench a city’s thirst. Rue Consolat takes its name from Maximin Dominique Consolat. He served as mayor from 1831 to 1843. He wasn’t just a politician. Consolat was a visionary who saw a city parched and desperate. He imagined a future where water flowed freely, nourishing the heart of Marseille. In 1834, Marseille faced a severe drought. Citizens received a mere liter of questionable water per day. This scarcity ignited tensions. Troops guarded water distribution points to maintain order. Amidst this crisis, cholera swept through the city, claiming hundreds of lives. Consolat witnessed the suffering. He realized the urgency of a long-delayed project: bringing water from the Durance River to Marseille. The Durance, seemingly a distant dream. It lay beyond formidable mountain ranges: the Chaîne des Costes, the Plateau de l’Arbois, and the Massif de l’Étoile. Yet, Consolat’s resolve remained unshaken. He declared, “The canal’s execution is irrevocable. No matter the cost, the canal will be built”. Rue Consolat stands as a testament to his determination. This straight thoroughfare slices through the districts of Chapitre, Saint-Charles, and Cinq-Avenues. It runs parallel to Boulevard Longchamp and Boulevard de la Libération, connecting Square Stalingrad to Boulevard Philippon. But Rue Consolat whispers more than just tales of engineering feats. It carries the echoes of its former name, “Chemin de la Madeleine,” a path leading to the hamlet of La Madeleine. It speaks of a time when the road, then too narrow, necessitated the construction of a parallel boulevard. This boulevard, also named Madeleine, later became the present-day Boulevard de la Libération. Rue Consolat pulses with life. Buses 74 and 81 traverse its length. Metro lines M1 and M2 rumble beneath. The C6 train line isn’t far, offering another connection to the city’s fabric. If you look closely, you might almost see the ghost of Consolat. A man who didn’t just lead a city but dared to reshape its destiny. He ensured that Marseille, his adopted home, would never again thirst.
