Want to stand where legends were made? The Nordsee-Stadion in Bremerhaven awaits. Opened in September 1975 the Nordsee-Stadion has been a sporting landmark. It is located in the Lehe district of Bremerhaven.
Imagine this the year is 1974. Construction begins on this very site. Fast forward to 1975 and 24 million DM later, the Nordsee-Stadion opens. To build the stadium 410 concrete piles were driven deep into the marshy ground. These piles some 15 meters long provided a stable foundation for the grandstands.
The Nordsee-Stadion is home to OSC Bremerhaven. This club emerged from a 1972 merger of local teams. The stadium’s size reflected the ambitions of its primary tenant. OSC Bremerhaven once played in what was then the third-highest league. They even ascended twice to the 2nd Bundesliga. Today OSC Bremerhaven competes in the sixth-tier Landesliga Bremen.
Beyond football the Nordsee-Stadion has hosted major national and international events. In 2005 the DFB-Pokal brought FC Schalke 04 to Bremerhaven. Nearly 10000 fans packed the Nordsee-Stadion to witness the match. In 2017 another DFB-Pokal match saw Leher Turnerschaft face FC Cologne in a sold-out stadium.
The Nordsee-Stadion boasts a capacity of 10000. The main stand offers 4000 covered seats. Opposite the grandstand 6000 standing places accommodate passionate fans. The stadium features a natural grass pitch and an eight-lane synthetic running track.
More than just a stadium the surrounding area forms a sports park. Here you’ll find smaller pitches with different surfaces. There is also a large sports hall and a swimming pool complex. The Restaurant Nordseestadion OSC completes the picture.
Since 1987 the city has managed the sports park. The swimming pool is open to the public. In 2010 the sports hall added retractable seating for 300 people.
The Nordsee-Stadion continues to evolve. In 2019 there were reports of planned renovations. This will ensure the stadium remains a vital part of Bremerhaven’s sporting life.
