Behold St Peter’s Church Munich a breathtaking sight. Its 91-metre tower known as Alter Peter pierces the sky. This isn’t just any church. It’s Munich’s oldest parish church the very heart of the city.

Imagine a time long before 1158 before Munich even existed. A pre-Merovingian church stood on this very spot. Eighth-century monks lived nearby on Petersbergl a hill now mostly forgotten. They laid the foundation for this sacred place. Their simple faith echoing through the centuries.

Then came a new church. Built in the Bavarian Romanesque style around the end of the 12th century. It expanded later in the Gothic style. Unfortunately a great fire in 1327 destroyed much of this magnificent work. But Munich rebuilt. The church was rededicated in 1368 its spirit unbroken.

Centuries passed. The tower received its Renaissance steeple. A Baroque choir was added. The beauty of St Peter’s evolved reflecting the changing tastes and styles of its eras. It stands as a testament to resilience.

World War II brought devastation. Allied bombing heavily damaged the church. Yet even this couldn’t extinguish its flame. It was lovingly restored. Its interior now displays masterpieces of art.

Look closely. Erasmus Grasser contributed a stunning figure of Saint Peter to the high altar. Five Gothic paintings by Jan Polack are hidden within. Discover the altars by Ignaz Günther works of exquisite craftsmanship. The ceiling fresco by Johann Baptist Zimmermann a marvel of Rococo beauty restored in 1999-2000.

Did you know that the church boasts some of the oldest bells in Munich? These historical bells have rung out over the city for centuries. One particularly poignant bell the Arme-Sünder-Glocke or Poor Sinner’s Bell. It once tolled during executions in Marienplatz. Today it hangs silently behind bars in the tower basement.

Climb the 300 steps to the top. You’ll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Munich. On a clear day you can even see the Alps. The view is simply unforgettable.
