How about a story about a university born from military roots? I am talking about the Armed Forces University ESPE. It stands as a testament to Ecuador’s evolution in education. Originally named Escuela de Oficiales Ingenieros, it was founded June 16, 1922.
President José Luis Tamayo had a vision. He wanted a school for engineer officials. It was a modest beginning. In 1936, the institution transformed. It became the Escuela de Artillería e Ingenieros. This was thanks to the Second Italian Military Mission. The focus shifted to technical education. Artillery science merged with engineering in a European style.
Following World War II, another name change occurred. It became the Escuela Técnica de Ingenieros. A pivotal moment arrived in 1972. Civilian students gained admission. Today, ESPE has multiple campuses. The main campus resides in Sangolquí. You can also find ESPE in IASA, Latacunga, and Santo Domingo. Each campus contributes to the university’s diverse offerings.
