Can you imagine a clock tower doubling as a cafe? Right here stands the Waveland Clock Tower, a unique blend of timekeeping and tasty treats. Built in 1931, the Waveland Clock Tower initially served as the Clock Tower Café. It was constructed alongside the Waveland Fieldhouse, now known as the Sydney R. Marovitz Clubhouse. The tower’s purpose was simple. It was a refreshment stand for those enjoying the nearby golf course, tennis courts, and even ping pong tables. Designed by Chicago native Edwin H. Clark, the Waveland Clock Tower mirrors the English Gothic style of other landmarks in Waveland and Lincoln Park. The goal was to bring the South Side’s fieldhouse experience north. Interestingly, a bequest from Annie Woolford in 1927 contributed to the tower’s creation. She envisioned a carillon tower, inspired by one she’d seen in Massachusetts. Although the chimes are no longer routinely played, they are still functional. The Waveland Clock Tower continues its service under the Chicago Park District’s ownership. Billy Casper Golf manages the tower, along with the city’s golf courses. Today, the Waveland Clock Tower offers more than just refreshments. It boasts stunning views of Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline from its two dog-friendly patios. Inside, you can catch a game on one of seven flat-screen TVs. The Waveland Clock Tower stands as a testament to its multifunctional history, a place where time, recreation, and refreshment intertwine.
