Have you ever wondered about the name Slough? As we stand here today, we are in the heart of a town that truly embodies its moniker. “Slough” – a word referring to muddy ground or a marshy place – was first recorded in 1196 and is believed to have originated from the damp and watery ground surrounding this area. The name stuck and it wasn’t long before Slough became a bustling hub, a place where travellers would stop for refreshments and change horses on their journeys. And so, our story begins. Imagine yourself in the 18th century, as the stagecoach rumbles past and drops its passengers at the ‘The Crown Inn. It was one of the most popular coaching inns for travellers on the Great West Road. What was once a quiet hamlet, surrounded by fields, blossomed into a thriving community. The town grew rapidly, becoming known for its brickyards and numerous nurseries. You might even say that Slough was the birthplace of the Cox’s Orange Pippin apple, first raised in the nearby village of Colnbrook around 1825! However, it was the dawn of the 20th century that brought about a transformation unlike anything Slough had ever seen. The former army motor repair depot, used to store and repair vehicles from the First World War battlefields, evolved into the Slough Trading Estate. Here, amidst a sea of factories, companies from all over the world established roots, turning Slough into a global hub.
It wasn’t without its critics, however. The famous poet John Betjeman even penned a poem titled ‘Slough’ in 1937, lamenting the loss of the countryside with the iconic line “Come, friendly bombs and fall on Slough.” But Slough has weathered the storm and persisted, embracing its modern identity.
Slough may not be a place of rolling hills or ancient castles, but it has become a place of industry, innovation, and diversity. Now, if you listen closely, perhaps, amidst the hum of the city, you can hear echoes of the stagecoach, and the whispers of those who once trodden through its muddy past.
