This name honored a significant local figure. The institution later became Schulzentrum Bürgermeister Smidt.

In 2004, a significant change occurred. The school was renamed Lloyd Gymnasium. That same year, Pestalozzischule I on Wiener Strasse was integrated. Today, the Lloyd Gymnasium comprises two parts. Many notable individuals attended this school. They include historian Otto Heinrich May and politician Helmuth Andreas Koch. Their achievements reflect the school’s impact. August Dierks was also a student here. He helped found the Deutsches Schiffahrtsmuseum.
