Slipping beneath the waves, the original Geeste Nordmole lighthouse met its watery grave in 2022. But don’t worry, its story doesn’t end there. In fact, the Geeste Nordmole Behelfsfeuer, a temporary light, now stands watch. It’s a beacon of hope, marking the spot where its predecessor once proudly stood. The original lighthouse, built back in 1914, replaced an even older, smaller structure from 1857. The 1914 lighthouse was a striking 14-meter-tall tower. It boasted a red light, a vital guide for ships navigating the tricky currents of the Weser River into the Geeste estuary and the fishing port. This area is notorious for strong tides and winds, making the lighthouse essential. Over the years, the Geeste Nordmole lighthouse witnessed countless vessels, weathered numerous storms, and even survived being rammed by ships. It became a beloved local landmark, a romantic spot for couples watching sunsets, and a gathering place for friends. In 2001, its importance was officially recognized when it was designated a protected historical monument. Then, in 2022, disaster struck. The north mole, weakened by time and the elements, began to collapse. The lighthouse tilted precariously, threatening to topple into the river. A dramatic rescue operation ensued. Experts meticulously documented the tower with 3D imaging. Then, piece by piece, they carefully dismantled it. The lantern, the railing, and even the red cupola were salvaged. These pieces are now safely stored, waiting to be incorporated into the new lighthouse. A temporary replacement, the Geeste Nordmole Behelfsfeuer, was erected nearby to ensure ships could still safely navigate the waters. The old north mole was completely demolished. The rebuilding of the mole and the lighthouse is a significant undertaking. The original lighthouse will be faithfully reconstructed using the salvaged pieces and the detailed 3D images. The Geeste Nordmole Behelfsfeuer, though temporary, carries on the legacy of guidance and safety. It serves as a reminder of the enduring spirit of Bremerhaven and the promise of a fully restored landmark on the horizon.
