Lost in thought I wandered into Thieles Garten. This Bremerhaven treasure isn’t just a park. It’s a living testament to a family’s artistic vision. Thieles Garten began as a 6000 square meter plot of land. The Thiele brothers Gustav and Georg purchased it in 1923. Leherheide was then a sparsely populated moorland and heathland. Gustav a trained violinist became a self-taught sculptor. His brother Georg a photographer was a passionate painter in his spare time.

Their creation wasn’t a planned masterpiece. It evolved organically over decades. The brothers began transforming their land in 1925. They fashioned a fantastical landscape. Numerous sculptures and fountains emerged. Concrete and construction wire were their primary materials. Their home a Moorish-style house served as their studio. A moor hut functioned as a guest house. They planted a diverse range of exotic and native plants. This took over 40 years. The garden expanded to 19000 square meters.

Initially Thieles Garten was private. Later it opened to the public. Tragedy struck. After the brothers’ deaths in 1971 Grete Thiele closed it. Neglect set in. Many sculptures were damaged or stolen. Thankfully Bremerhaven bought the estate in 1985. Restoration began. The Förderverein Thieles Garten e V was established in 1987. The garden reopened in 1990. It became a cultural venue for concerts readings and exhibitions.

Today Thieles Garten stands as a unique cultural oasis in Bremerhaven. Its blend of nature and art is captivating. Grete Itzen Georg’s wife often modeled for Gustav’s sculptures. Many female sculptures bear her likeness. You can see her influence throughout the whimsical landscape. The garden attracts artists even today. Its fairytale atmosphere inspires creativity.

Thieles Garten offers a journey through time. It reveals the artistic passion of a family. It’s a testament to the power of preservation. Their legacy lives on in this magical space. Explore its hidden corners. Discover its unique charm. Embrace the artistic heart of Thieles Garten.
