Hidden behind the unassuming Impasse des Carbonnets in Asnieres-sur-Seine lies a remarkable piece of Parisian history. This is the Square des Carbonnets. It’s not just a square. It’s the former site of the Gare des Carbonnets also known as the Gare Lisch. This unassuming square holds the secret of a train station with an extraordinary past.

The Gare des Carbonnets a testament to ingenuity and resilience began its life far from this quiet location. Originally constructed for the 1878 Exposition Universelle in Paris its elegant metal framework filled with brick was designed by the architect Juste Lisch. Imagine the bustling atmosphere of the Champ de Mars the sounds of the fair surrounding this elegant station.

But the Gare Lisch’s journey was far from over. After the fair its impressive structure was dismantled. It was then meticulously reassembled in Asnieres-sur-Seine in 1897. This move wasn’t arbitrary. The Western Railway Company’s workshops in Asnieres-sur-Seine had been destroyed by a tornado. This necessitated the relocation of the beautiful station. This station became the electric terminus for the line to Bois-Colombes for twelve years. It served as a vital link between Paris and the suburbs.

The Gare des Carbonnets even faced abandonment and a near demolition in 1983. It was only saved due to the efforts of a local resident. His dedication led to its listing on the supplementary inventory of historical monuments in 1985. Thanks to this dedicated citizen’s actions this unique piece of Parisian heritage survived.

Today the Square des Carbonnets is a reminder of this extraordinary past. Although the station itself is in ruins its legacy persists. It serves as a poignant reminder of the station’s unique journey. The story of the Gare des Carbonnets is more than just a tale of a train station. It’s a story of resilience of unexpected relocation and of the enduring power of preservation. The Square des Carbonnets whispers stories of Paris’s vibrant past. It reminds us of the importance of preserving our heritage. It shows the dedication of those who fought to save it.
