Hidden amongst the lush hills near Kandy stands Sri Rajopawanaramaya Temple a place of serenity and spiritual significance. This isn’t just any temple. It is part of a trio of magnificent structures. These temples tell a story of faith artistry and resilience. Sri Rajopawanaramaya Temple along with Lankathilaka Viharaya and Gadaladeniya Viharaya are situated on rocky outcrops overlooking a valley. Imagine the builders the skilled hands that carved these temples from stone. They hewed the granite into breathtaking shapes. Their artistry echoes through the ages. These three temples were built during the Gampola period between 1341 and 1408. A time when Kandy was a thriving centre of power and culture. Sri Rajopawanaramaya Temple itself boasts a unique design. Its architecture blends elements of Dravidian and Sinhalese styles. A testament to the cultural exchange that shaped the region. The temple’s construction materials speak volumes. It is mostly made of sculpted granite. This is unusual for temples of this era. Most were built using brick and stucco. The main shrine of Sri Rajopawanaramaya Temple is a marvel of engineering. It is built entirely of sculpted granite except for the brick shikharas. These shikharas crown the sanctum. They’re unique structures resembling dagobas. The shrine houses a majestic seated Buddha statue. The statue is 2.43 metres tall. It depicts the Buddha in the Dhyana Mudra posture of meditation. Adjacent to the main shrine sits a devale. It’s dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu. Originally dedicated to Varuna this devale reflects the syncretic nature of religious practices in Sri Lanka. The temple complex also features a secondary shrine. This is the Vijayothpaya or Vijayantha Prasada. It’s named after the mythical palace of god Indra. This shrine holds a central stupa. This stupa stands 12.3 metres high on a square platform. Four smaller stupas surround it. They extend out in the four cardinal directions. These stupas once housed statues of the Four Heavenly Kings. Now they hold statues of the seated Buddha. Sri Rajopawanaramaya Temple is more than just a collection of stones and statues. It’s a living testament to faith resilience and the enduring spirit of Sri Lanka. A place where history art and spirituality intertwine. It’s a journey through time a connection to the past. A reminder of the rich cultural heritage of this island nation. Let us now step forward. We will explore further this incredible temple.
